Really?

14 Dec

I had to take a picture of this. I hope those of you who watched MissRepresentation can understand why this would be upsetting.

Imagine if this was professional attire? Is this the message we (as a society) are sending to young people??? Team 9A should all wear this tomorrow, even Mr. Duarte.

I appreciate your commentary!

Turn-it-in: 2011 -12 Account Information

7 Dec

We are going to be using turnitin to submit essays, peer edit and check for plagiarism (among other cool things!).

You must upload a paragraph as a trial run (anything you want) to turn-it-in. This is not going to be graded on content, but on if you successfully upload it (so, a Pass/Fail homework assignment).  You need to learn HOW to use turnitin, so this is a trial paragraph.

This is your opportunity to use this and set up your account. I expect you to do this and require you to do this by the due date. I will be moving forward with using this program, so please ask for help from me or your librarians.

Things to include:

  • Write it in the program you would use to write an essay
  • 25 -50 word paragraph
  • Your user name/password should be included in the paragraph; just in case you forget it, I have it handy!
  • You can: humor me, tell me a joke, something about you, how annoying school it…I don’t care.

Please refer to the chart including your section information. You will need the password and log in information to create an account. Please use your full name (first and last) to create the account AND use the email account that you check everyday. I will contact you via email. MAKE SURE YOU SIGN UP FOR THE CORRECT SECTION!!!!!!

It is simple, like uploading pictures onto facebook. You can either upload the document, or cut and paste, whichever you would like.

If you have any questions, post them here in the comments section, be sure to leave your name. If your peers want to answer, they may do so. Or, you can check with Ms. Moniz or Ms. Estrada in the library.

DUE: FRIDAY 12/16 by 2:30 pm

Good luck!

MissRepresentation: Black Friday Protest

2 Dec

Black Friday has passed, but we know the shopping madness in America is only beginning.

Over the next few weeks, millions of people in this country (and in places all around the world) will spend many millions of dollars on gifts for family, friends and loved ones. So what better time to take action around our spending habits?

Voting with our money is one of the most powerful ways we can impact the society we live in.

That’s why we are launching a campaign on Twitter, inspired by Girls For a Change, to keep track of the positive choices we make when buying gifts this year.

If you see a product or advertisement that misrepresents or degrades women – whether in a store, online or in a magazine – here’s what you can do to make a difference:

  1. On Twitter, post a description or picture of the offensive item with this hashtag: #notbuyingit
    1. ex. “The ads displayed at Abercrombie & Fitch are degrading to women. I wanted this sweater but now I’m #notbuyingit
    2. 2. If you’re not on Twitter, send us an e-mail (imran@missrepresentation.org) about what you’ve seen and why it bothers you, and we will post it for you!

If enough of us publicly tell these companies that we won’t buy into their offensive advertising or products, we can get their attention and see real change happen!

In the past few months alone, we’ve seen corporations as big as JCPenney and Forever 21 change practices in reaction to public outcry.

We really appreciate your continued support of our campaign and all the small actions each of you are taking daily. We are reading all your stories of courage and commitment and look forward to many more to come. So keep sending them in!

Thanks,

Jennifer Siebel Newsom and the MissRepresentation.org team
