About Ms. G

In Hong Kong...YMCA!

Hello Everyone! Thanks for checking out this page and I appreciate you taking the time to get to know me. Since, I expect you to share and let me into your life, then I will have to let you into mine!

Most of you know about my family, have wished my mom a happy birthday or called to check in on my grandmother. I have a large Italian family, who is slightly crazy, but I adore them and am extremely close to them. I grew up in Springfield, MA and spent my adolescence and high school in Enfield, CT. I started my college experience at Southern Connecticut State University and eventually transferred and graduated from Fairfield University with a B.A in English and a Secondary School Certification. I will be attending UMASS Boston in the Spring to earn my M.Ed.

Trying to play drums with my South African friend, Vuyo

I was really nervous about getting a job right after I graduated. Since I love to travel, I enrolled in a teach-abroad program in near Cape Town, South Africa. I taught grades 9-12 in a township called Kayamandi and traveled around Southern Africa to Namibia, Botswana, Angola, Zambia and Zimbabwe. I have so many wonderful stories from this experience and I try to incorporate them into our lessons.

After South Africa, I came back to the U.S. and began teaching and coaching soccer in Shelton, CT. I needed a change of scenery, so I moved up to Boston and got a job here at Boston Latin Academy.

In Rome at the Colosseum, July 2010

Today, I coach JV girl’s basketball and am looking forward to another winning season! I hope to see you at try-outs or to show your school spirit at our home games! I do offer extra credit, just as Agron. Additionally, I have run the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) which is a support and advocacy group for LGBTQ students and their allies. We do several events each year which help to raise awareness and create a more tolerant environment at BLA.

In addition to Southern Africa, I have traveled to England, Hong Kong, ran student service trips to Mexico and I drove cross country twice. I have traveled to Spain twice and have ran with the bulls in Pamplona in July of 2009. I was also a 2010 Fund for Teachers fellow and earned a grant to travel to Europe to study the Holocaust. This experience allowed me to travel to Amsterdam, Berlin, Prague, Krakow and Rome. In Summer of 2011, I celebrated my birthday in South America. There, I started my trek from Lima, Peru, hiked Machu Picchu and ended my journey in La Paz, Bolivia. Also, I am honored to be able to bring my experiences back to the classroom.

Nevada

Nevada!!

I also have a dog, whom I talk about all the time! While traveling across the country, I took a bathroom break at a rest stop in Nevada and found this little tiny puppy in the women’s room.  So, I put her in the car, took her home and named her Nevada. Seven years later, she is a part of my family and I love her so much! Isn’t she adorable??

I live in Boston and in my free time, I run. A lot. I also box. Not girly kick boxing, but like put on some gloves and hit things. I am also toying with the idea of training for a competition.  As you have read, being active is a necessity in my life.

So, if you have any additional questions, just let me know! I have a pretty interesting life and have lived in several places all over the world. I am also interested in learning more about you too! So, let’s chat!!

I hope you can, too! Traveling around the world is AMAZING and I have learned so much from my experiences.

If you would like, I can help you to find summer programs for high school students. I have previous students who worked or studied abroad over the summer. There are so many opportunities out there!

Wow…. This sounds amazing. I can’t believe that you have been to all of these places that I actually want to go to myself! I have been to many of the states, Rome, and Ethiopia. I really hope that I get the opportunity to travel as many places as u have… As long as I win the lottery:)

      Helem…

Thanks for commenting! You need to go…everywhere! Wow! Ethiopia! That’s amazing. You have to tell me about it!

But, don’t worry about the lottery. There are so many programs for young people and students to travel for free under work stipends or volunteer programs.

Look in to it and maybe next summer you can send me a postcard from a far away place!

Your experiances of the world and life has always amazed me. You are a very athletic and outgoing teacher. This always made me comfortable. I liked to read that you coached soccer. Soccer is my favorite sport. Maybe you can coach me sometime haha. Anyways good luck with your new students, I’m sure they are afraid of you now, I was too in the beginning. But I tell them that they will like you in a short time. I’m so glad you are here for another good year at B.L.A!!

Ms. Gentile this is crazy. Honestly I’m jealous ! I thought I’ve been some pretty cool places but i think this kind of tops my experiences, if you will. And your dog . . . amazingly cute. The story that goes along side your meeting with him is even better. I’m very excited for class this year . :)

Found your website!! It looks great… and it makes me miss BLA.

I never realized you did so much traveling. I’m a junior now, and studying abroad in London for the spring semester. It’s an amazing experience (and my first experience outside of the US and Canada). I can only hope to travel as much as you have :) . Do you have any recommendations for funding?

I hope to see you soon,
    Dina
