BB/ARITS Essay: Compare and Contrast

Directions: You will write a Two-page essay comparing and contrasting the literary techniques/film techniques used in both the novel and the movie. You will need a clear thesis, one contrasting point (main idea), evidence from the novel AND the film. Then one comparative point (main idea), evidence from the novel AND the film.

TOPIC: Compare and contrast the literary techniques/film techniques used in both the novel and the movie. You will need to make a thesis about this. 

You will be uploading your essay to turn it in! NO HARD COPY! This will be graded by the rubric but done electronically! So, be sure you follow instructions on the assignment for using turnitin.

This will be a test grade for TERM 3

Tips: Your thesis should be simple and clear. Remember the work we did in class with comparative/contrasting points. Even for the contrast, you need to find what is similar:. “they differ on their interpretation of racism”  or something like that; find the collective difference.

Directions:

  • Read the passages below (you will need your book).
  •  Then, summarize and analyze them! You need to look up words/people/places, etc that you don’t know in order to analyze the passages! 
  • Be sure to look for their connections to what we have been discussing in class: the influence of perspective, power, oppression, social status, dreaming of opportunities, and the growth/changes in Richard. 
  • Each response should be about 100 -200 words. 
Respond to:
  1. “I was now rapidly learning to contain the tension…or I had discovered deep within me ways of handling it” (224).
  2. “To our minds the white folks formed a kind of…our talk was restricted to the petty relations which formed the core of life for us” (229).

BB: Quiz Review ch 1 – 11

Objective: You will be reviewing and You will need to make 15 flashcards to review for the DOUBLE quiz (meaning: it counts TWICE in my grade-book!).

DIRECTIONS: You will be making flshcards in order to Quiz your peers on the plot and events in chapters 1 – 11, Richards character development, passage analysis, vocab, background information,  supplementary information (poems, articles, essays, etc). Once you have your flashcards, you will be placed in groups/teams in order to play against other “teams.”

If you are unprepared for class, you will take a double ZERO for HW and CW. Then, you will have an alternative assignment! Class will only be as fun as you make it!!!

15 flashcards need to include the following and have this point value. You can decide how many you would like to make in each category, but no more allowed. Point values are the same for each category.

  • Up to THREE flashcards of Vocabulary (1 point each): Use the word in a sentence providing context clues.
  • Up to FIVE flashcards on Plot: (2 points each): this can be multiple choice, or an elaborative two-part answer
  • Up to THREE flashcards Passage Analysis (4 points each): short 5 – 8 lines of a passage, be sure to identify the speaker, the scenario, and what it reveals about Richard, bigger picture, connect to what we have discussed in class. 
  • Up to SIX  flashcards on Background information/supplementary information (4 points): You can ask questions that compare/contrast the novel to other poems and pieces of work/background information we have discussed in class (poem, articles, etc). You can ask multiple choice questions about THR, Jim Crow, Urban Migration, etc. 
  • Don’t be limited to the examples I have provided for you! You can create something so difficult it makes your brain bleed! The harder the better! Stump your classmates!!

Directions: read the chapters and thoroughly answer the questions. You will need to analyze the passages as well as give  a summary!!

  1. How did Richard’s family react to his sixth grade promotion?

ESSAY TOPIC: Create an expository essay and choose a theme presented in the novel, prove the theme to be true, using supportive reasons and specific evidence from the novel.

Due Date: 12/18

Rubric:

_______(15) Body Paragraphs: The topic sentences are direct extensions of the thesis. There are Relevant ideas, clear topic development, indicates knowledge of the thematic idea expressed in the novel.
