Parent Permission Slip: Schindler’s List

2 Jan

Please have yoru parent read this. I need their signature in order to show the movie! If you can print this post, have your parent sign it or have your parent write me a note indicating if they approve or disapprove, something! I need this by WEDNESDAY!

Dear Parent,

As you know, your students are involved in many intriguing activities throughout the school year. In my class, it is important that your child learn from a variety of resources: primary texts, non-fictional pieces, personal narratives, hands on activities and anything that will get them as close to the authentic as possible.

Since it is impossible to time travel or completely recreate history, students have the opportunity to do this through film. One movie, Oscar winning and Spielberg produced Schindler’s List connects to our thematic unit plan for the year and focuses on the marginalization and oppression of others.

Please know that this movie is tragic, graphic, violent and vulgar, but at the same time is most educational. It will be most effective for students to understand the human condition and desire for power: when one commits virility and evil towards others, there are still those who transcend such evil using compassion.

I have full confidence that my students (your child) will watch and comment with maturity; they have all proven this to me while watching Born into Brothels and their impeccable behavior during our Art Gallery. I am positive that this will be no exception in their capabilities.

Please sign this statement indicating if you wnat your child to view the movie in its entirety. If you choose not to have your child watch the movie, he/she will be given an alternative assignment (at no penalty).

Thank you and please email me if you have any additional concerns. Also, CLICK HERE for more information about the movie.

Best,

Ms. Angela Gentile

House of Cards

9 Nov

ForeclosureDear Grades 9 and 11 (and seniors, educate yourself! You are welcome to watch, too!):

Since we are both discussing racial themes in the novels, The Harlem Renaissance and The Great Depression, I have posted a link below for you to view an exciting (and user friendly) documentary about the downfall of our current economy.

Here is the documentary, House of Cards. Here, CNBC presents the defining story of our time. Correspondent David Faber investigates the origins of the global economic crisis and the events leading to the most devastating financial collapse since the Great Depression.

If you want to learn more about bank and government bail outs, CLICK HERE for a documentary, Inside the Meltdown from Frontline.

Enjoy!
