Current Event Directions: Read the following directions below for your section. We are doing this in segments, but ALL classes will have to do this at some point during the term. Pay attention to the due dates.

Find a Current Event: Sections E and F ONLY

Due: Wednesday 2/15

Directions (Sections E and F):

  • Research the following websites for local, national and international news. You need to find an article that discusses the role of feminism: THINK ABOUT:  is this oppressive to woman, does this limit her right to equality, individuality, normality, free will? Or in what ways is you article an example of free will, individuality, and equality?  Is this positive or negative for women? Explain…
  • This article should be within the past month or so.
  • In the comments section of this assignment: Cut/paste the link as part of the post. DO NOT PUT IT IN THE SPACE THAT SAYS WEBSITE. If you do, your comment will go to spam and you will NOT get credit.
  • Cite a least ONE line
  • Do NOT repeat articles!!
  • Remember, current events and celebrity news do not count! You need credible news sources (see below)!
  • Your responses should be insightful and each bullet point below with at least 5 sentences!!!! Analyze the connection!
  • Then, along with the link, answer the following questions
    • What is this about? Where does it take place?

  • No more than TWO people per post
  • You must read the article!
  • Your responses should be at least 200 words. Be sure to WORD SLAP!
  • Read it and respond to it as a “reply”.
    • Do you agree/disagree and why?
    • Use debate language: “You said…., but I disagree because…” or “Good point about…and I agree because…”
    • Think about your own views about woman’s right, Jane Eyre and how it connects to the post.
    • Totally ok if you fight and argue. I think a discussion back and forth is amazing!!!
    • WORD SLAP!!

  • You need ONE from each (So TWO specific references in your response)
  • No more than TWO people per post
  • You must read the article!

Hello Everyone!

I wanted to give you an opportunity to watch this incredible documentary, write about it, and share for extra credit! 

This documentary takes a look at the over sexualization and “pornification” of the American media. Unfortunately, women are objectified as these sexual play things and decorative fixtures in society. You will get some information about disparities in gender, culture and expectations. Learn how much the media can influence and reinforce stereotypes.

What you need to do:

  • Watch “MissRepresentation” on the OWN Network. If you don’t have the network, go to a friends house and watch together! You might be able to youtube it!
  • Take notes as you read, respond to the documentary: self, world, text, etc. What bothers you, what do you agree with or disagree with and why? 
  • Use those notes to answer the questions
  • You will need to answer the questions below thoroughly, 
  • Attend and PARTICIPATE in a “media Chat” in the upper library from 1:50  - 3 pm on Friday 10/28
  • Sign In and OUT so that I know you were there. 
  • You will earn Extra Credit for your participation (up to 25 points on a TEST)

Questions:
  • Find a quote, phrase that someone said that you want to word slap, positively or negatively. What is the quote and what do you want to say about it? Why does it need slapping?
  • What do you agree with and why?
  • What do you disagree with and why?
  • What is your perspective of women in the media? Has it been influenced by this documentary
  • How can you connect this to your own life? Think of a situation that you, personally, have experienced that relates to the issues discussed in the documentary.

Feminism WebQuest: Research and Define

Directions: Due on Tuesday 10/5. Read the articles and watch the videos (YES, you will need youtube). Then, answer the following questions. Many of the questiosn require you to have your own thought process and evaluate the world around you. Be sure that you are able to answer the questions and define terms in your own words. However, you are welcome and encouraged to look up things you do not know. Be sure to create a PROPER MLA formatted works cited page for your sources.

  1. What is feminism? Define it in your own words.
  2. Can Men be feminists? Explain.
  3. Feminism has moved in “waves” describe the three waves (decades) and any other cultural movements/advancements/set backs that went along with it.
  4. What is the difference between sex and gender? Are they the same things or are there different connotations associated with them?
  5. What is suffrage?
  6. CLICK HERE and watch the following video about Woman’s suffrage. Then, respond. How does this make you feel? What does it say about society and movements in Women’s liberation and equality?
  7. What is objectification?
  8. Does the Media objectify women? Find an example of a TV show, music video, etc in which you think women are being objectified. What message does it send about women? Should we, as a society, feel badly for the women who chose to be in this video? Why or why not?
  9. Read/annotate the following Article. CLICK HERE. (IF you can’t view it, I have cut/pasted the article on the homepage. CLICK HERE for it instead)Then, explain your view. Take a stand and support it with examples. Do you agree or disagree? Why or Why  not?
  10. Create a MLA formatted works cited page for the sources you used for your definitions and staple it to your responses above. USE THE MLA SOURCES FROM CLASS (AND ON WEBSITE) TO HELP YOU!!! THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME YOU HAVE USED MLA FORMAT, REGARDLESS OF YOUR PREVIOUS TEACHERS!!!

DUE: TUESDAY 10/5.
