OMAM: Essay

20 Oct

Prompt:

  • We have discussed our terms for the year (POCIFAN) and have connected them to the novel, Of Mice and Men. The author uses the words of the characters to send a message to the reader about one of those terms. Now, you will have to articulate this in a well developed essay.
  • What message is the author sending the reader on the topics of POCIFAN??

Think about:

  • Think about one of these topics and decide what the author is telling you. This is going to help you to create a thesis (like our summer reading essay).
  • You worked in groups discussing the themes of this novel, so use that lesson to help you plan a thesis that you can PROVE and SUPPORT!
  • Once you have your thesis, you have to show me why it is important. Remember, you aren’t telling me that the topic exists in the novel, but thinking about HOW and WHY it exists.
  • What does the author want us to know about the theme?
  •  Remember: if it comes from the book, it is EVIDENCE!! So, use the book as a resource to support your claims from your brain (Think MEAL Plan).
  • The bulk of your essay is going to be based on what you think and what you believe to be true: from your BRAIN!!

Reminders and requirements:

  • No late work!
  • Due by the start of class!
  • FINAL COPY READY = stapled, all drafts attached.
  • This essay is DUE on the DUE DATE! You have about a week to get this together! Plus, you will be working step by step to put this together with the ability to utilize your class time!
  • You must complete each step in order to move on to the next!
  • Essay between 2 – 3 pages, no more than 3!
  • MLA format = typed, TNR 12, citations, work cited page (resources in the back of the class and online!).
  • You need to follow the guidelines for an introduction, body paragraphs, textual evidence and a “so what” conclusion.

Of Mice and Men: Ch. 5/6 Reading Comprehension

11 Oct

Directions: As you read the last two chapters (5/6), answer these questions.

Chapter 5:

  1. In the beginning of the chapter, what is Lennie afraid to tell George? How did it happen?
  2. How does Lennie react to the dead puppy?
  3. What does Curley’s wife regret? What could she have done with her life and what stopped her from doing it?
  4. What are the “mules” that Curley’s wife is wearing? Based on the author’s description of her, how do you think this reflects her personality and does it allow for us to be sympathetic to her? Explain.
  5. What does Lennie do to Curley’s wife? How does it happen?
  6. If a woman is dressed provocatively, puts herself in a position to be a sexual object, and gets harassed by a man, is she asking for it? Is it her fault? What if she isn’t dressed provocatively? What if she isn’t in the “wrong place.” Is it ever her fault and what responsibility does the man have?
  7. Now, refer to back to the times Curley’s wife enters the novel: what is she doing, saying, what is her description? Do you think she is “asking for it” or is it Lennie’s fault? Explain.
  8. On page 91, what does Lennie say or do that indicates he knows right from wrong? Write the passage and Explain how/why is shows this.
  9. On page 94, what does Candy want from George and what is your opinion of this? Explain.
  10. At the end of the chapter, what decision does George make concerning the well being of Lennie? Why does he decide to do it, be specific.

Chapter 6:

  1. What is a “luger”?
  2. In what ways does the author show you Lennie’s mental break down and what does this indicate about his ability to know right from wrong and his morals?
  3. What does Lennie ask geroge to repeat? Why? Why does it mean so much to Lennie? What do you think it means for Geroge? Why does he repeat it?
  4. What does George do to Lennie? Why?
  5. What do you think George was thinking when he did this (see above)? Do you think he feels guilt, relief, anger, etc? Why? Be sure to use evidence from the text to support your answer.
  6. Do you agree with George’s decision? Does he use his power “appropriately?” why or why not?
  7. Does George do what is best for Lennie or for himself? Explain.
  8. What does “symbiotic” mean and do George and Lennie exemplify this? Why or why not? Use examples from ch 5 /6 to help support you.

Online Text: Of Mice and Men

28 Sep

Dear students,

We do not have enough books in the English Department to cover all of my students. I am trying to teach the curriculum with the book rotation, amount of students, and the supplies provided to me. However, I do not have enough books for all of you.

We will be reading as much as possible in class, you know, like the district schools do, and then I will assign homework based on what you read. It is not ideal to my teaching style, but it is what I have to work with.

In case you do not finish the reading assigned to you, I have found a FREE ONLINE TEXT of the novel.

Please note: page number will not be the same.
